Annual Alpharetta “June Singing” of the Sacred Harp

Release your spirit in this uniquely American tradition. The Singing of the Sacred Harp brings a variety of people from shared cultural heritages together to sing four-part hymns and anthems. Beginners and newcomers are welcome as singers or listeners. No musical experience or religious affiliation is required.

This annual event in Alpharetta has been bringing together an informal network of people interested in participating and promoting a cappella singing from the Sacred Harp and other shape note singing books for over 140 years!.

Sacred Harp Singers typically sit in a hollow square forming one of four voice parts on each side of the square, with the singers facing inwards so they can see and hear each other as they sing the powerful old songs that shape note singing.

The term “Sacred Harp” refers to the human voice, and the tradition of Sacred Harp singing is deeply rooted in sacred choral music widely sung in the Southern region of the United States, and in a larger sense is part of the tradition of shape note music—musical notation designed to facilitate congregational singing.
